THE LONG BEACH TO CATALINA AND BACK OFFSHORE PLATINUM CLUB

These are racers who have truly differentiated themselves by winning the prestigous Long Beach to Catalina & Back Offshore National Championship Race. Those who have done the race understand the many variables that play a role in achieving the win in the 58 mile round trip race to Catalina and back.  Riding skill, navigation, physical endurance, will power, lots of horsepower and selection of the best craft for the conditions on race day. Congratulations are in order for these riders who will always have "bragging rights" for a LB2CAT win. Congratulations!

Updated Play by Play of the 2008 LB2CAT Helicopter Footage

Helicopter Footage:
Understandably, PWCOFFSHORE.com has been overwhelmed with questions about the DVD and helicopter footage; "what place was I in here, who was leading where, did the helo get a shot of me here" etc.  So....... on the evening of Thursday July 24, Gerner, Kim Bushong and Robert Carreon of PWCOFFSHORE and Young Huynh of the Southern California Watercraft Club spent 3.5 hours doing a frame by frame (pause, stop slow motion etc) review of the 2008 LB2CAT Helicopter Race footage on a 52 inch plasma TV Screen.  We were able to look at numbers, pause, do slow motion etc. and took copious notes with pen and pager.  We think we got it correct this time.  Here is the final review, there are a number of corrections from the previous version. Again, this is some great footage.  Here you go - Play by Play:

Helo missed footage of the very start of the race
Field Spread out, everyone WOT going to break wall
Lots of craft moving to break wall hard to distinguish behind break wall
Warner WOT in front - great shot
Lee Phan and Warner together to break wall, Warner ahead but not by much - Lee Phan has great start and his craft hauling backside
Great shot of Craig Warner TEAM KAWI leaving the break wall, ULTRA looks beautiful and he and the ULTRA are hammering it. Lee Phan RXT about 70 yards behind him prior to break wall.
As they exit break wall Lee Phan about 30 yards behind Warner trying to close distance
Hit break wall sea state picks up significantly and ULTRAs move and gain ground - a few miles out shot of Lee Phan and Kearns on red ultra about 20 yards off to side of Lee Phan, Kearns overtakes Lee Phan for 18 seconds.
Kearns pulling away, hits wave and gets major air and gets tossed, boat goes flying to Les Phan's path.  Lee Phan makes quick maneuver to avoid hitting him in the water - missed Kearns by feet.  Nice job Lee Phan, close call.
Long close-up of Lee Phan about five miles out - great shots
7 miles out: 1st is Warner, 2nd is Lee Phan, 3rd is M. Gerner of PWCOFFSHORE, followed by 4th /Curtis Reinburg GFORCE, 5th/Michael Younts GFORCE, 6th/Paul Pham of PWCOFFSHORE, 7th/David Walker, and then 8th/Robert Carreon of PWCOFFSHORE
8 miles out:  Carreon and David Walker Battling for 7th
10 miles out GFORCE Younts ahead of Carreon for a second Robert Carreon pulls ahead of Younts into 6th
11 Miles out:  Warner in1st, Reinburg, M Gerner, and Lee Phan all tied for 2nd, too close to call GREAT BATTLE FOR SECOND PLACE
11 miles Paul Pham in 4th (ongoing battle still going on ahead of Paul for second), Carreon in 5th and Taylor Curtis in 6th
Paul Pham pulls ahead to take 3rd place behind ongoing battle for second place between Reinburg, Gerner and Lee Phan
14 Miles out:  1st is Warner, 2nd is Reinburg and 3rd is Gerner
14 miles out 4th is Lee Phan, 5th is Taylor Curtis and 6th is Robert Carreon
16 miles out Gerner closely behind Reinburg battling for 2nd
Warner way up in front
Great shot of Warner and the ULTRA way out in front! Warner Hammering down
18 miles out Warner half mile ahead of the pack - helo does sweeping move that enables us to see the distance
Back to pack:  Shot of Steve Friebe PWCOFFSHORE/CLAWSON
Long shot of Paul Pham, followed by Lee Phan who is followed by Taylor Curtis
Taylor Curtis Battling Lee Phan for 4th
18 miles out Current standing: Warner 1st, Reinburg 2nd, Gerner 3rd, Taylor Curtis 4th, Lee Phan 5th
19 miles out Lee Phan overtakes Taylor Curtis - Lee pulls away at high rate of speed - good shot of Lee
Long close ups of Gerner in 3rd - great shots for long time high speed, Gerner lets off throttle to avoid a clearly visible brown sea-weed/Kelp Bed in front of craft, gets launched, see kelp splashing as Gerner and craft hit the water hard core - pretty amazing shot.
Long shot of the ocean, helo appears to be readjusting, goes back trying to figure out where everyone is - THE FIELD IS NOW VERY SPREAD OUT SO HARD TO TELL PLACES with the exception of Warner 1st & GFORCE' Curtis Reinburg in 2nd
25 miles out Friebe, John Anick, Briscoe and Walker
Carreon is on top of screen, North of pack
Looks like a GFORCE boat Curtis Reinburg goes to incorrect turn boat, has to adjust
Kim Bushong PWCOFFSHORE ULTRA at turn boat - 3rd place to turn boat
Taylor Curtis appears to be 4th to turn boat
5th to turn boat:  Lee Phan and then Paul Pham
Michael Younts in in there somewhere, we just don't see shots of him on helo video at the turn boat
John Anick and Steve Friebe, neck and neck around the turn boat, rubbing rails, Anick overtakes Steve Friebe.  Battle for 8th
Sea Sate picking up more and more, SeaDoo's hulls bouncing. ULTRAs clearly in comfort zone
See Robert Carreon PWCOFFSHORE on green ULTRA battling with an RXT Brian Briscoe with green hood, RXT is in front of him - long shot of the doo.
Carreon Ultra in the rough with the RXT, appears to overtake RXT on right in heavy sea state, Carreon hammering down….  Good battle
Boats slowing down, fatigue setting in
Steve Friebe gets Launched (did not see the launch) he is in water by his boat, getting back on - quick shot
Boats all spread out now
Great shots of the Taylor Curtis Yammy SHO in front of Lee Phan RXT and Paul Pham RXT, Paul Pham behind Taylor SHO, all of a sudden Lee Phan picks up speed and overtakes the SHO/Taylor Curtis, sea state picking up a little, then Paul Pham passes Curtis. Good battle.
Beautiful shots of Bushong hammering it on the way back, ULTRA looks beautiful 3rd, Michael Younts behind him battling in 4th.  Younts has made up a lot of ground (Bushong's craft breaks later, don't see it)
Great shots of Reinburg hammering down on the final leg back to Long Beach - great shots
Beautiful close-up shots of Craig Warner hammering it in 1st for a long time on the way back. It is truly remarkable to see the ULTRA hull in its glory in the rough.
Warner crosses finish line and he wins - great footage of the Kawasaki! Great footage of Warner, more footage of Warner
